Serving the eye care needs of patients for more than 75 years, Ohio Eyecare Specialists is among the United States longest operative ophthalmic practices.

Our physicians specialize in major areas of eye disease.   This training allows us to bring advanced experience and knowledge to every patient, including fellowship training, which can require up to three additional years of training beyond the required residency in Ophthalmology. This type of training has allowed them to become sub specialists in their respective fields.


Dr. Edward R. Thomas is the Medical Director of Ohio Eyecare Specialists. Dr. Thomas also works closely with the Dayton Area Diabetic Association.

Dr. Thomas' expertise and extensive research in Ophthalmology and in particular, Cataract Surgery, Diabetic Eyecare Management, Retinopathy Laser Surgery has enabled him to hold four medical patents. He has been a clinical advisor for many projects including the original silicone aphakic extended-wear contact lens, intraocular lenses and implantation. Utilizing state-of-the-art technologies and the latest surgical techniques, Dr. Thomas has performed tens of thousands of cataract removals and lens implant surgeries. These techniques and technologies are determined for each patient based on comprehensive patient history, current surgical information, examinations, and testing.

Dr. Peter C. Koumas is the director of our Xenia office as part of Ohio Eyecare Specialists. He has been an integral part of Ohio Eyecare for the past 8 years.  He was previously in private practice in Dublin, Ohio for 17 years. 

He has worked extensively with Ophthalmology residents in Columbus, Ohio for 22 years.  He was the Chairman of the Ophthalmology Departmentat Doctors Hospital in Columbus from 1990-1991, 1993-1994, and from 1997-2000.  He has also been the team Ophthalmologists for the NHL Columbus Blue Jackets from 2000- 2003.

Dr. S. Timothy Shafer  is the optometric director of Ohio Eyecare Specialists. He coordinates optometric and ophthalmic clinical activities, as well as patient screenings and refractive evaluations.

Dr. Shafer also serves as Lab Director for Ohio Eyecare Specialists.  He is trained in new advanced lab testing that can help diagnose dry eyes.   He has special interest in therapy for dry eyes as well as difficult to fit contact lens patients. A graduate of optometry at Indiana University, Dr. Shafer continued his post graduate studies at the University of Cincinnati, for his Diagnostic Pharmaceutical License (DPA), and at Ohio State University for his Therapeutic Pharmaceutical License (TPA).

Dr. Amina Husain joins Ohio Eyecare Specialists, Inc. with expertise training in the areas of cataract surgery, cosmetic facial procedures, oculoplastic and reconstructive surgery as well as refractive surgery.     

Dr. Husain was raised in Dayton, Ohio and is a graduate of Centerville High School.  Her training includes Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine, followed by residency at University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas.  She completed an internal medicine internship at Kettering Memorial Hospital, where she also did an externship at The American University in Cairo, Egypt as well as an externship in corneal diseases at Sir-Run-Run-Shaw Hospital in Hangzhou, China.
